Whiplash, and related Neck Injury Information
What is whiplash and what are whiplash neck injuries?
Whiplash is typically a neck injury sustained in a car accident, almost immediately upon the moment of impact when the cars collide. The injury is brought about by the rapid backward and forward, or sideways motion, of the head and neck.
Whiplash happens in a split second. Almost immediately after impact, in less than one twentieth of a second, the cervical area of the spine is forced into a so-called S-Curve. The upper area of the cervical spine is flexed forward, while the lower area is extended backward. This rapid flexing and bending motion forces the cervical spine beyond its normal range of motions, into an unnatural position. Damage to ligaments, tendons and spinal discs may follow.
The term "Whiplash" was first used to describe a medical condition in 1928. "Whiplash Injury" refers to damaged bone and soft tissue, whilst "Whiplash Associated Disorder" is more severe, and is a chronic disorder.
What causes Whiplash, and Whiplash Neck Injuries?
The most common cause of whiplash is accidents involving cars. Sport related whiplash is not uncommon, especially from contact sports such as rugby, football, and boxing, although there are many cases of whiplash sustained while skiing or skating. A slip and fall can create sufficient velocity to cause whiplash. Shaking a child back and forth violently can cause whiplash.
At the moment of impact, motion forces are transmitted between the colliding objects, and transferred to the head and neck area.
Whiplash is a term that most often describes injury to the neck that occurs as a result of a car accident. The most common type of car accident causing whiplash injury is the rear impact, and most typically, the occupant in the vehicle that gets "rear-ended" (hit from behind) is at the greatest risk of injury, including from whiplash.
A whiplash accident injury occurs when one motor vehicle strikes another from behind, causing motion forces to be transmitted from the striking vehicle to the struck vehicle. These forces are then transmitted to the occupant(s) of the struck vehicle, where they have the potential to cause whiplash injury.
43% of car related whiplash accidents are from rear end collisions. In such an accident the front vehicle moves forward, taking the occupant's supported torso with, but leaving the unsupported neck and head behind. The neck and head then move forward, often violently, to catch up with the rest of the body. In a head on collision, the process is reversed, with the neck and head snapping forward, and then backward. This type of whiplash injury accounts for 32% of accidents leading to whiplash. The remaining 35% of car accidents that cause whiplash are side smashes, spinning and rolling.
